Law Of Attraction: Reality Or Nonsense?

Friday, October 17th, 2008

The law of attraction - in simplest terms - states that what a human being feels strongly about and focuses intently on (either with or without conscious effort) will manifest in one or more ways on the physical plane. In other words what we think about can and does becoem a reality.

Is this true? To be honest I can’t see how anyone would discredit the notion.

While there are a number of debatable topics within the overall idea behind the law of attraction, on some level it must be obvious that our thinking has a very real and concrete impact on what we call the physical world. One doesn’t need to believe every minor detail found in popular books and films, but it seems to me very difficult to eliminate the possibility that human consciousness shapes the world we live in.

The current popularity of the term law of attraction began with the release of the film entitled The Secret. But the term was actually coined in the English language in 1906 by William  Walker Atkinson in his book Thought Vibrations: Law Of Attraction In The Thought World.

The term and concept law of attraction have been used numerous times since, including by renowned Christian writer Norman Vincent Peale, author of the all-time best-seller Power Of Positive Thinking. The law of attraction is absolutely not a new idea or a self-help fad.

In fact the core notion of manifesting reality is thousands of years old. It’s also worth pointing out that many scientists in fields like quantum physics and string theory study advocate the validity of the law of attraction.

So what’s the real controversy? Why the big debate as to whether or not law of attraction is real?

There are many reasons, and it’s beyond the scope of this blog to review them all. But traditional skepticism and fear are two of the leaders.

Many people recoil at the idea that a human being has any real power. We are creatures of flesh, bone, and instinct with nothing great to offer as far as some are concerned.

And of course numerous religious groups fear movements surrounding awareness of the law of attraction will somehow detract from their influence on society or “lead people astray”. This is nonsense right out of the dark ages.

I recommend everyone explore the concepts of manifestation and attraction for themselves. Look at multiple sources on the issue and decide for yourself.

This is an important time in human history. At last the idea of personal responsibility and personal power are growing on a major scale!

Before you decide to believe or not believe in the phenomenon we call the law of attraction, spend some time in research and introspection. Look at the matter from many angles and ask the core question:

Do your thoughts and actions create your reality or is life something that just happens to you beyond your control?

People from all schools of thought want to pick the issue apart and argue over every nuance. This is pointless beyond a little entertainment value and the love of a good debate.

The critical issues at hand are responsibility and power. I believe it’s time humanity embraces both and creates a world we can be proud to pass on to future generations.

Guaranteed Paychecks

Friday, September 26th, 2008

One thing I hear a lot from people when I tell them I’m an entrepreneur is…

“I don’t see how you can make it without having a guaranteed paycheck waiting on you every week!”

This statement in one form or another is a huge excuse people use for not taking the leap and going into business for themselves. While I’m not suggesting anyone just up and quit their job right now without any sort of game plan, I basically believe the idea of a “guaranteed” check is nonsense.

Why should the word of a corporation be worth more than my own promise to myself?

I just doesn’t make any sense that I should put more stock in the owner of a big company than in my own ability to create cash flow. The fact is I do guarantee myself a paycheck!

And I make good on my promise month after month. The notion that one should put all their faith in other parties is typical, and it’s sad.

People want to rely on others to sign their checks, the same way people want to rely on the government to fix society’s problems. I believe this is evidence of a large fear of responsibility.

The world’s current problems are the result of everyone pointing the finger elsewhere and/or expecting others to pick up the slack. But entrepreneurs are different.

We understand the value of risk. In truth there is no real security so what’s the big deal?

And there’s more than enough money to be made. Your skills and knowledge can likely net you far more if you cut the middle man, i.e. an employer, out of the picture and deal directly with customers and end users.

Guarantee your own paycheck and odds are you’ll be much happier and have a lot more money in the bank.

Do What You Love As Much As Possible

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Why does it seem so hard to just let go and do what we love to do? I’m talking here about work, business, etc.

Of course for some this is easy. But for many of us it’s not.

While I am essentially doing what I love, I seem to find ways of keeping myself stuck in work that is not my absolute passion. I’m glad I get to work from home, glad I have this kind of awesome freedom.

But when it comes right down to it I really want to get up every day and just write. I don’t want to fool with marketing plans, advertising, customer support, or any of that “crap”; I just want to write the days away!

Certainly some days I do write away. But often I find myself being “responsible” and doing the things I feel must be done to keep my operation running.

This is, of course, the way it must be. OR IS IT?

The truth is while I feel this is being responsible I honestly think I need to let go of all this “need to do” nonsense and just go with what I really want to do. I’m reaching a point in my life where I’m fed up with all the day-to-day stuff that “needs to be done” in my business and before long I expect I’ll be walking away from a lot of things.

Being happy - really happy - in my work is what matters. And I feel if I just take the leap and go for it the pieces will come together.

I’m sure I’ll always have to spend some time on the work aspect of my business. Of course I’m not thinking I can totally let that go, but I know deep within I am avoiding my real passion of writing by keeping my nose in all the marketing and managing work.

Life is too short. Big change is coming soon and I may even vanish from the Web in terms of having any real “face time” and marketing presence.

I believe a person is more productive and ultimately more profitable when they are immersed in work they find compelling and challenging. Could this be the way life is meant to be; are we missing the point by doing all these things that “must be done”?

I don’t have the answer and ultimately I’m just scribbling here. But for those who hate your work - quit as soon as possible and start doing something you like.

It’s not as hard or scary as it sounds. Trust me I did it years ago and never looked back.

I’ve done many things and every time I make a mjor change I find myself spending more time writing and less time on other work. The closer I get to building the ultimate business (where I just write all day) the happier I am each day to get out of bed and start working.
